When Huntington, NY area patients think of acne, they often think of teenagers going through the hormonal changes in puberty. However, many patients deal with acne well into their adult years, often in their 30’s and 40’s. Additionally, patients who have had severe acne in the past may have telltale scars left behind on their skin. These dimples and divots can be difficult to conceal effectively with cosmetics. Instead, Dr. Roger Koreen of Dermatology and Cosmetic Laser Center may encourage patients to consider facial fillers. These are injections that can help in smoothing the skin and effectively improving deep acne scars such as “ice pick” scars. These scars are narrow and deep and cannot be corrected with other methods as well as with facial filler injections.
What are facial fillers?
Facial fillers, also known as dermal fillers, are typically used for cosmetic purposes. One of the most popular brands, Juvéderm, is used regularly in our practice. Dr. Roger Koreen uses Juvéderm, an injectable made with hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that is naturally produced by the body and can be injected into areas of the skin to attract water molecules. In doing so, the skin is smoothed, especially when large divots such as ice pick scars develop from severe cases of acne. These injectables are more commonly used in treating fine lines and wrinkles on the face caused by the natural process of aging. When patients are dealing with ice pick scars, Juvéderm can be injected into the scars to smooth the skin.

These cosmetic injectables are not permanent. Instead, they often provide results for several months. To maintain the results, patients will need to consider having these injections done regularly, several times a year, to keep the skin smooth. Juvéderm is completely safe and has been approved by the FDA for cosmetic use, including the treatment of acne scars.
What about active acne?
If patients have active acne alongside their acne scars, they must focus on treating the active acne first before considering cosmetic treatments for acne scarring. Our practice offers several different ways to address acne, including:
- Topical and oral prescription medications
- Picosure laser skin treatments
- Light-based therapies
Once the active acne has been controlled, patients can then work with a professional to address the scarring that has been left behind. We want our patients to feel confident in their skin, and by treating active acne first, this can significantly reduce the risk of developing more acne scars on the skin.
