As common as tattoos have become in our society, millions of people have at least one unwanted tattoo. The developments in laser technology now allow dermatologists to help their patients regain clear, un-inked skin in a short amount of time with minimal chance of scarring. Laser tattoo removal in Huntington, NY, at Dermatology & Cosmetic Laser Center provides a comfortable alternative to treatments such as dermabrasion, chemical peels, and surgery, options that carry a high risk of scarring. These treatments were popular before the development of laser therapies.

HOW LASER TATTOO REMOVAL WORKS

Lasers are ideal for the removal of unwanted tattoos. Dr. Roger Koreen is proud to offer tattoo removal with the PicoSure device. The ultra-short pulses emitted by this device go beyond photothermal activity and actually have a strong photomechanical impact on unwanted ink. Patented PressureWave™ technology has been shown more disruptive to pigment beneath the skin, leading to faster results in fewer treatment sessions.

Has there been a recent breakthrough in Tattoo removal?

There has been a big breakthrough, back then before the 1980s, people could remove tattoos, but all the methods left tremendous scaring. Then in the 90s,2000s, we had the earlier generations of laser which did work.

Why were the earlier lasers not so effective?

It took many, many treatments there was a significant recovery, a lot of times scabbing, blistering and it was relatively painful for the person to take.

What is the new tattoo removal laser?

With the new laser call PicoSure, it is so non-painful that they usually don’t need any anesthesia at all. The number of treatments needed is like 50% less than before.

They usually just get like a mild scabbing afterward and then we tell them to come back in about 6 weeks until its gone.

Do you want to change a part of your past that no longer suits you? PicoSure may be your ideal solution. Call (631) 417-3300 for more information on safe laser tattoo removal.

Treatable conditions

PicoSure is effective on:

  • A wide variety of pigments
  • Inks that are notoriously challenging to remove with other methods or earlier-generation technologies, such as green and blue hues
  • Old as well as new body art
  • Tattoos that have been treated previously

You can expect a good response to PicoSure picosecond technology, even if you have stubborn dark or old tattoos. PicoSure also has an additional cosmetic benefit; this FDA-cleared device features a focus lens array. What that means is, in this setting, we may use PicoSure to treat:

  • Acne scars
  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Hyperpigmentation such as melasma
  • Solar lentigines or “age spots”
  • Other signs of sun damage and aging, from freckles to visible pores

There are many applications for PicoSure. So, it’s a versatile treatment option to treat several conditions affecting a patient and treat many different types of patients with various skin concerns.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Laser tattoo removal begins with the cleansing of the skin. The laser is quite gentle on the skin, feeling like small snaps from a rubber band. Many patients can sit through treatments without anesthetic, though some of our patients choose to have anesthesia injections for total comfort. You can discuss your wishes with our staff before treatment. It is our goal to achieve your desired outcome while keeping you comfortable in the process.

As the laser device is moved over the surface of the tattoo, laser energy is directed towards the tattoo. The amount of time needed for each treatment session will depend on the size of the tattoo. After the area has been treated, we will apply an ointment and a protective dressing to preserve moisture in the treated skin.

Immediate side effects from treatment may occur but will last only a short time. Common sensations experienced with laser tattoo removal include tenderness, swelling, redness, itching or a sunburned feeling, and possible crusting. Potential long-term side effects like discoloration are discussed during the consultation visit.

If side effects linger or seem abnormal, contact our office for follow-up care.

PicoSure laser tattoo removal is a safe and effective way to eliminate ink you no longer want. To achieve optimal results, we may schedule several treatment sessions, the number of which is determined by the size, location, color, and age of the tattoo.

Frequently asked questions about the picosure laser

There are many benefits to PicoSure. As a short-pulse laser, PicoSure produces rapid bursts of energy, a trillionth of a second at a time. These fast and short “flashes” alleviate the heat that is transferred. This characteristic reduces the risk of damage to the skin outside of the treatment area. Additionally, PicoSure’s unique design triggers a process that supports new collagen and elastin without burning the skin. And this process is also proven to quickly remove unwanted pigment deep in the skin (including highly-pigmented inks).
The length of each treatment session and the total number of required treatments depends on several factors. These factors include the condition(s) that you wish to treat and specific characteristics of those conditions. For instance, a larger-sized tattoo will generally take longer to treat than a smaller-sized tattoo. Skin revitalization treatment and an average-sized tattoo may be treated in around 10 minutes (each session). Our patients who have had their tattoos removed appreciate that PicoSure treats inks quickly and gets results with fewer treatment sessions.
Typically, we suggest waiting six to eight weeks between treatments for tattoo removal. If we are treating other types of pigmented lesions, treatments may be recommended at two- to six-week intervals. The difference between the treatment intervals for tattoo removal and skin revitalization comes down to the required energy; it takes more energy to remove inks. Additionally, the results from tattoo removal (and scar removal) are permanent. Maintenance sessions will be recommended every six months to prevent pigment from clustering to form age spots and slow the progression of lines and wrinkles. Plans are personalized to your specific needs — tattoo removal, skin revitalization, or both!
PicoSure requires minimal preparation and post-treatment care (no downtime). However, since lasers such as PicoSure target the melanin and pigment that gives skin its color, tanning can interfere with treatment effectiveness and efficiency. Also, it’s important to protect your skin well. So, new pigmented lesions don’t form. Lasers can also make your skin more susceptible to damage from ultraviolet light produced by the sun’s rays. We urge you to exercise good “sun hygiene,” and to minimize your exposure, and use a broad-spectrum UVA-UVB sunscreen product of at least SPF30+.

Tattoos do not necessarily have to be a permanent marking on your skin, nor do you have to live with other pigmentation problems that also detract from your confidence. Dr. Roger Koreen and Dermatology & Cosmetic Laser Center can safely remove your unwanted “ink” and other pigment troubles, precisely, quickly, and painlessly. Schedule an appointment at our office by calling (631) 417-3300.
