Treatment for all types of psoriasis From Huntington Expert Dermatologist

Millions of Americans suffer from psoriasis, a chronic skin condition that can have drastic physical and emotional effects on the body. Many patients visit us asking, “What is the cause of psoriasis?” It is caused by dysfunction in the immune system.

Psoriasis is more than just a skin condition; patients with it are at an increased risk for other conditions such as heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, or depression. Because of this, it’s important to see an experienced dermatologist for diagnosis and treatment.

There are five main types of psoriasis:

Plaque Psoriasis

This is the most common type of psoriasis and causes raised silver patches of inflamed skin. It can occur on various body parts including the scalp, lower back, knees, and elbows. The most common trigger for plaque psoriasis is stress.

Guttate Psoriasis

This type can begin in childhood because of medications, stress, injury, or infection. Outbreaks of tiny red spots can appear suddenly on the abdomen, arms, or legs.

Inverse Psoriasis

This type of psoriasis causes shiny lesions in skin folds, particularly in areas around the buttocks, groin, and breasts. They are often exacerbated by sweat.

Pustular Psoriasis

This type causes red skin and blisters that can appear only on the hand and feet, or can come up all over the body. It’s most commonly triggered by infection, pregnancy, or medications.

Erythrodermic Psoriasis

This is the most inflammatory type of psoriasis and can cause intense redness, pain, and shedding of skin. If erythrodermicpsoriasis goes untreated it can lead to pneumonia, fluid loss, and congestive heart failure.

While there is no known cure for psoriasis, it can be managed effectively with proper treatment, drastically reducing symptoms, and improving your quality of life. If you have psoriasis, don’t suffer in silence, contact the team at Dermatology & Cosmetic Laser Center.
