Life with vitiligo is a constant struggle to hold on to your identity. Vitiligo (also known as leukoderma) is a medical condition that impacts all people. This chronic condition leads to the loss of pigmentation on one’s skin. Sadly, vitiligo is incredibly unpredictable and can affect skin anywhere on the body. It’s said that between one and two percent of Americans live with vitiligo.

What Causes Vitiligo?
Vitiligo occurs when the body’s melanin-producing cells begin to die or not function as they should. Once the body stops producing melanin, the affected skin will lose all color.
Diagnosing Vitiligo
A doctor often diagnoses vitiligo before the patient turns twenty. The most common symptom of this condition manifests as non-pigmented patches on your skin. Discoloration tends to begin in areas of the body routinely exposed to sunlight. Common areas include:
- Lips
- Face
- Hands
- Arms
- Feet
Once impacted, patches of skin will start appearing lighter than surrounding skin. In many cases, the condition can leave the skin completely white.
Treatment of Vitiligo with the XTRAC® EXCIMER LASER
Thankfully, vitiligo treatment is non-invasive and safe, using the XTRACT ® Excimer laser to target areas of skin afflicted with the condition. The laser uses a surgically precise beam to target specific skin cells and delivers exact doses of light only to those areas, leaving the surrounding skin unaffected.
