Laser treatment for vitiligo

What is vitiligo?

Vitiligo is white spots on the skin that can vary in size. It’s caused when melanocytes, the cells responsible for skin pigmentation, stop producing melanin.

The most common body sites for vitiligo are:

  • Face, hands, and chest
  • Around any openings such as the eyes, nostrils, mouth, nipples, belly button, and genitals
  • Arm pits and groin
  • Hair (both scalp and facial)
  • Around moles

Vitiligo is a rare condition, affecting only about one percent of the population. Most patients with vitiligo will experience some type of pigment loss early, before the age of 20.

The exact cause of vitiligo is unknown although it’s most likely a combination of immunologic, genetic, and environmental factors. Individuals with light skin often first notice the pigment loss during the summer months, when the contrast between sun-exposed skin and the skin without pigment becomes more pronounced. Individuals with dark skin can notice the early signs of vitiligo at any time.

Is there a cure for vitiligo?

The XTRAC Excimer laser utilizes focused laser light to treat patches affected by vitiligo. The laser focuses only on the affected area, using enough energy to stimulate repigmentation without impacting healthy skin.

XTRAC laser treatments are safe for any areas of the body, although it tends to be most successful on the face and neck. XTRAC is safe for use on children and adults with vitiligo. Treatments are given several times per week, depending on the area and severity of the condition. Most patients will begin to see repigmentation in the vitiligo patches after six to twelve treatments. The total number of treatments will depend on the individual.
