Vein Treatments

Lady Getting Vein Treatment, Vein Treatments Huntington Veins that appear just beneath the surface of the skin can be very noticeable. Dr. Koreen treats spider veins and facial veins with proven technology.

Spider Veins

Spider veins, tiny clusters of purple, red, and blue “threads” can be found on the legs, chest, neck, and face. Almost anyone can have these superficial vessels, which are an inherited condition. Spider veins that occur in the legs are sometimes accompanied by varicose veins. When found alone, spider veins are more of a cosmetic concern than a health risk. This condition can be easily treated in the office of your experienced dermatologist.

For many years, sclerotherapy was the only way to treat spider veins. Today, we use a therapeutic combination of sclerotherapy and vascular laser to produce the best possible results. Sclerotherapy treatment consists of injections of a sclerosing solution into visible veins. This solution produces inflammation and swelling in the walls of treated vessels, which leads to closure. Immediately following injections, we further treat veins with the application of laser light, which heats vessels containing the sclerosing agent, accelerating the process. Each of our patients is treated based on his or her particular needs and wishes. Spider veins may be treated with one of these therapies or with a combination of the two. We make this determination during the initial consultation for care.

Vein treatments produce progressive results that get better through a series of treatments. With each minimally invasive session, veins will appear a little lighter until, after a month or two, they are no longer visible at all. Sclerotherapy and laser treatment for veins is only minimally uncomfortable, creating a mild pin-prick or stinging sensation as medication is administered. Treating veins not only improves your physical appearance, but also your confidence.

Patients of the Dermatology and Cosmetic Laser Center in Huntington can expect the very best when they visit Dr. Roger Koreen. Our office is equipped with proven technologies like the Elite+ from Cynosure. Spider veins can be treated quickly, efficiently, and more quickly thanks to the larger spot size available with this device.

Facial Vein Treatment

Small veins that appear on the face can be treated with laser therapy. This form of treatment is safe and effective, treating pigmented and vascular structures beneath the skin while leaving surface skin cells intact. Pigmented and vascular structures absorb the intense light of the laser, and this light is converted into heat within the vessels. Heat damages the walls of the vessels, causing them to gradually fade away. Many smaller vessels and spots may be eliminated with 1 or 2 laser treatments. Larger spots are likely to require multiple treatments for full resolution.

Laser treatments may be used to treat smaller areas of concern or to improve the skin on the entire face. Full-face laser treatments continue to grow in popularity. Many people who have developed broken capillaries on the cheeks and nose will also have smaller areas of concern on other parts of the face, such as the chin. Treating the entire face allows us to address all areas and achieve a more uniformed texture and tone.

The two lasers in the Elite+ aesthetic workstation, 755 nm Alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG, are proven to improve the appearance of the skin, diminishing spider veins and broken capillaries while prompting the regeneration of collagen for better support from the inside out.

What to expect during treatment

In our office, Dr. Koreen or one of his trained, experienced staff will apply a topical numbing cream to the skin before proceeding with treatment. Treatment itself consists of moving a hand piece across the skin. As the hand piece moves, pulses of laser light pass through the skin. Depending on the size of the treatment area, the treatment session may last from 15 to 40 minutes. Following treatment, we may apply a cold compress to the treatment area to soothe the skin and minimize side effects like redness or swelling.

Achieving optimal results

Every person’s skin is different. This means that laser therapy for facial veins may consist of a few or several sessions. An estimated number of treatments is recommended after a thorough consultation and examination of the skin. How many treatments one needs will depend on the location and size of vessels, as well as their color. These factors may also dictate the frequency at which sessions are scheduled. Most patients benefit from treatment sessions scheduled three to four weeks apart. Some people achieve optimal results with just one or two sessions. Typically, however, it takes three to five sessions to accomplish the goal of clearer skin.

Laser vein treatments provide men and women of all ages with a non-invasive way to better maintain youthful, healthy skin. The intense pulsed light and medical lasers used today can correct a number of benign conditions including uneven pigmentation, sun spots, rosacea, port wine stains, birthmarks, spider veins, and raised or broken capillaries on the face. This safe and effective treatment can allow you to enjoy rejuvenated skin and improved confidence.

Side effects of laser vein treatments

There are very few side effects to laser treatments for skin rejuvenation. We discuss temporary side effects such as the immediate darkening of spots or a flushed appearance during the consultation for care so that there are no surprises after laser treatment.

Sclerotherapy

Varicose and spider veins can be emotionally and physically distressing. These problems may be caused by a number of factors, including heredity, prolonged sitting or standing, pregnancy, and more. Existing veins may become more visible with age. At the same time, new veins may emerge. Spider veins, small clusters of tiny veins, are often noticed on the legs, but may also develop on the face. Fortunately, there is a proven solution to spider veins: sclerotherapy.

What to expect from sclerotherapy treatment

Sclerotherapy has been used for more than half a century to eliminate unsightly veins. This treatment remains very popular due to its efficiency. Treatment sessions, of which several may be needed, can take from 15 to 45 minutes depending on how many veins are treated in a single session. Sclerotherapy works by introducing a sclerosing solution into affected veins. This solution generates irritation within the walls of the vessel. In time, the vessel decomposes and fades away as the body naturally heals the “damage” done by the sclerosing agent.

Over the course of the recommended number of treatments, most patients see 60 - 80 percent resolution of visible vessels. Because veins are naturally broken down by the body, clearer skin is noticed gradually and consistently over the course of several weeks.

Side effects

Veins treated with sclerotherapy may darken initially before they begin to fade. Bruising may also occur. Larger vessels may look more pigmented for a short time after treatment, but skin will gradually improve. After sclerotherapy, we recommend that strenuous activities and prolonged standing be avoided for a day or two. Patients may also be encouraged to wear support garments that snuggly wrap the treated area. The gentle pressure of the support garment can facilitate the healing process and minimize side effects.
