Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is laser therapy that is effective at treating a wide range of skin concerns including acne, sun damage, and pre-cancers known as actinic keratosis. At Dermatology & Cosmetic Laser Center in Huntington, NY, Dr. Koreen uses PDT therapy with immense success for many patients.
How PDT works
Photodynamic therapy requires application of a photosensitizing solution prior to the light treatment. The solution is absorbed by the abnormal areas or lesions. Dr. Koreen will then use a specialized light to activate the solution, causing a reaction that destroys abnormal cells. The result is healthier, clearer, more radiant skin.
Advantages of PDT
PDT has many benefits, one of the biggest is its ability to manage precancerous cells before they turn into squamous cell carcinoma. Photodynamic therapy reduces sun damage and improves the appearance of the skin. Other treatments for actinic keratosis only work on individual lesions, while PDT can focus on entire areas of the skin.
When used to treat acne, PDT can produce results without the need for oral medications. This is important because many oral acne medications can have internal side effects.
Number of treatments
While results from photodynamic therapy can be seen after one session, most patients will require a series of three treatments spaced two to four weeks apart for optimal skin clearing.
Side Effects
PDT can produce side effects including red, peeling skin. Inflammation may also occur around the lips or eyes. After treatment, areas of pigmented skin will appear dark before peeling away and revealing clearer skin. It’s important to avoid sun exposure for at least 48 hours after treatment and always wear proper sun protection.
