Your skin is continually exposed to the elements. Sun exposure, pollution, dirt, and debris in the air can dull the tone and texture of the skin leading to blemishes and other skin conditions. Many patients in the Huntington area come to us wishing they could improve the appearance of their skin and potentially eliminate the need to continually cover it with make-up. At the Dermatology & Cosmetic Laser Center, we provide several options for non-invasive skin treatments. One of the most popular is microdermabrasion.

Microdermabrasion is a safe treatment that gently exfoliates dead and damaged skin cells to promote cellular turnover. It also stimulates blood flow, which means when new skin cells emerge there is improved elasticity and texture along with clearer skin that is free of irritation and inflammation.
How it works:
Microdermabrasion uses exfoliating crystals to remove dead skin cells. To put it simply, think of microdermabrasion like an extremely gentle ‘sandblasting’ of the skin. The fine stream of crystals buff and polish the skin to clear up skin conditions including clogged pores, uneven pigmentation, fine lines, and even melasma.
At home microdermabrasion versus in office microdermabrasion
Many individuals have seen at home microdermabrasion treatments and have wondered, “Why go to a dermatologist for something I can do by myself?” The answer is that at-home microdermabrasion treatments differ from in-office procedure in several ways. In-office microdermabrasion performed by a professional is much more powerful and has a larger motor which means it can penetrate the deeper layers of skin for a more complete exfoliation.
Because microdermabrasion treatments in a doctor’s office tend to cost more, at home treatments can be a great way for patients to keep skin looking great between professional visits.

Microdermabrasion is a safe, versatile treatment that can be used on virtually all skin types and colors. Because it is gentle, it works on superficial skin, leaving no changes in skin color or any scars. Patients with more serious conditions such as deep acne, stretch marks, or scars are not candidates for microdermabrasion.
What to expect with microdermabrasion
A microdermabrasion procedure on the face can usually be done in around 30 minutes, while other areas of the body can take longer. The procedure may produce mild discomfort, but should not be painful. Make sure to speak up if you feel like the treatment is too aggressive.
After microdermabrasion, the skin often feels dry, which means a rich moisturizer should be applied to the treatment area. It is normal for the skin to look pink and feel tight like a sunburn or windburn for about 24 hours. The skin will be more sensitive to sunlight so it’s important to minimize sun exposure and use a good sunscreen. Make-up should be avoided for 24 hours after the procedure.
Most patients will need approximately 6-10 microdermabrasion treatments spaced about every two weeks for best results.
Results from microdermabrasion
Most patients will notice an immediate improvement in skin tone and texture after their first microdermabrasion treatment. A specific number of sessions will be suggested, depending on your specific skin concerns. As treatment progresses, patients will continue to see an improvement in elasticity and tone. Because microdermabrasion treatments are so gentle, it’s safe to add this procedure as a regular part of your skin care routine.
At the Dermatology and Cosmetic Laser Center, our goal is to help our patients feel as beautiful outside as they do on the inside.
