Aging affects every part of the body. The skin is where the signs of aging tend to be most noticeable. In addition to age, factors such as stress, sun damage, lifestyle habits, and genetics all dictate the overall appearance of our skin as it ages. At The Dermatology Cosmetic and Laser Center, the IPL photofacial treatment is often the best laser therapy for the improvement of lines and wrinkles as well as other concerns. In our Huntington dermatology office, we help patients choose which laser treatment will best suit their individual needs after a thorough consultation visit.

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy

In addition to treating lines and wrinkles, the IPL procedure can improve the appearance of:

  • Acne scarring
  • Facial veins
  • Enlarged pores
  • Sun damage
  • Birthmarks
  • Rosacea
  • Age spots
  • Sagging skin
  • Actinic Keratoses

How IPL treatment works

The IPL photofacial treats the skin with intense pulsed light. This process begins with cleaning the skin and the application of a cooling gel. Protective eyewear will be worn by the patient and staff to buffer bright bursts of light. The light waves of the IPL hand piece target the melanin and hemoglobin in blood vessels, promoting the production of elastin and collagen, fibers that support supple, younger looking skin. IPL treatment only takes about thirty minutes, after which follow up care is minimal.

Preparing for IPL treatment

Prior to the IPL photofacial, it is beneficial to avoid tanning, including the use of tanning beds. Self-tanning products should also be avoided for the two weeks prior to treatment. We will also discuss any medications that are being used to ensure no light sensitivity occurs.

After treatment

IPL treatment produces some redness in the skin that will look like a mild sunburn. This side effect will gradually fade over the 24 hours following treatment. It is possible to apply makeup to skin right away, and to resume regular activities right after leaving our office. In some cases, mild bruising may occur, lasting a few days.

The results of IPL are cumulative due to the increased production of collagen and elastin in the deeper layers of the skin. To achieve optimal results, we typically recommend a series of treatments performed a few weeks apart.
