In studies of this condition, which was discovered less than fifty years ago, the suspected cause of eczematous reaction in the skin has been identified as the mole itself. Treatments in which the originating cause, the mole, was excised, lead to resolution of eczema in the area.
Eczema does not develop around every mole and, in fact, we do not see many cases in which it does. Individuals most likely to develop a Meyerson nevus, according to research, are young men. Additional factors that have been identified with risk include UV exposure and certain types of medication.
The good news in treating eczema related to a mole is that it may not be necessary to remove the mole itself. In many cases, eczema lessens over the course of several weeks. If this does not occur naturally, options for treatment can be explored.
Treatment for eczematous lesions may involve a course of topical corticosteroid therapy. Because inflammation can make it difficult to assess the characteristics of the mole, follow up may be scheduled in the weeks after treatment has cleared swelling and itching.
