Facial expressions are a part of effective communications. What you say silently with your face is often as important as the words that come out of your mouth. It is essential for communications in both professional and personal relationships. Unfortunately, the repetitive muscle movements associated with such expressions as smiling, laughing, and frowning, can lead to the development of permanent lines and wrinkles on the face. These lines and wrinkles impact your appearance, often making you look older than you feel. Botox is an injectable solution to these dynamic lines and wrinkles that can rapidly and efficiently take years off your appearance.

What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable protein that is derived from Botulinum Toxin A. It works by relaxing the muscles to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the face. It works on lines and wrinkles that are caused by common expressions such as laughing, smiling, and frowning. Botox is not an effective treatment for lines and wrinkles that result by the loss of skin volume.

It’s important for patients to understand that Botox cosmetic treatments are temporary. For most people, this means about three to six months before it’s time to have repeat injections. Over time as the muscles are relaxed more, many patients can go for longer periods between treatments.

What to expect before, during, and after Botox

Before Treatment

Results from BotoxBefore receiving Botox injections, patients should avoid sun exposure for at least two weeks. This ensures that the skin isn’t burned. It’s also a good idea to avoid any waxing or tweezing in the area as well. It’s also recommended to discontinue any medications that can thin out your blood such as aspirin or ibuprofen as they can lead to an increase in bruising. Always make sure to check with your prescribing physician before discontinuing any medication. Alcohol should also be avoided for a week prior to injections.

During Treatment

Botox injections are given in units and mapped out prior to your procedure. The number of units required varies depending on the treatment area, the thickness of your skin and the strength of your muscles. On average, most patients require anywhere from 12 to 24 units in the most common treatment areas. Men often need more units than women for similar results.

Dr. Koreen uses a tiny needle to inject the medication into the desired areas. The injections are quick and relatively painless, most patients report very minimal discomfort. Botox procedures can usually be completed in about 10-15 minutes. Afterward, patients are free to get back to their normal activities.

After Treatment

Woman with perfect skinResults from Botox are not immediate and will gradually appear in the days following your procedure. You will be given instructions for exercising the facial muscles and should avoid lying down for several hours afterward. This is because it could potentially cause the injection areas to become irritated or allow the injected Botox to migrate out of the desired area.

Most patients experience little to no side effects from Botox. At worst, there may be some inflammation, bruising, or redness in the treatment area, but this will go away fairly quickly.

One of the biggest concerns among patients prior to receiving Botox injections is the fear or worry about the potential of a “frozen” looking face. Patients of Dermatology & Cosmetic Laser Center have nothing to worry about. Our team is expertly trained and highly experienced in Botox injections to ensure natural-looking results.
